The SJLS Guardianship Project for Children assists low-income parents with disabled children to apply for guardianship before the child turns 18. Volunteer attorneys receive a questionnaire with most of the information needed to draft the complaint, any documents which indicate any diagnoses and other relevant education and/or medical records provided by the parent.
The initial financial eligibility screening is handled through the SJLS Centralized Intake Unit (CIU). Cases are then evaluated to determine if they meet the SJLS case acceptance guidelines. If a case is determined to be one that we handle, the case is referred out to one of the volunteer attorneys on the Private Attorney Involvement Program panel (PAI).
